The Cancer Research Center of Hawai‘i is a research unit of the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa; it was established in 1981 and became an NCI-designated cancer center in 1996. The scientists, physicians and staff of the Cancer Research Center of Hawai‘i work to reduce the burden of cancer through research, education, and service with an emphasis on the unique ethnic, cultural, and environmental characteristics of Hawai‘i and the Pacific.

The Cancer Center collaborates closely with major community and military medical centers in the islands. Its research expertise includes scientists who focus on Nutrition, Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology, Alternative Medicine, and Pharmacology, just to name a few. The developing Thoracic Oncology Program consists of faculty investigating how environmental and chemical carcinogens, viruses, and genetics interact in mesothelioma and lung cancer.

In addition to its research programs, the Cancer Center also conducts cutting edge prevention and treatment trials supported by the NCI and pharmaceutical companies and operates the Hawaii Tumor Registry and the Cancer Information Service.
